Really appreciate this piece and your eloquent rationale.

You have described a problem that I have encountered frequently while working on my frustratingly-complex family tree. There are relatives who have added "slave distinctions" to the given or chosen names of our ancestors, which I cannot abide by. I am fine adding an enslaver's name as a footnote, but not further oppressing my ancestor by forever attaching them to the atrocity forced upon them. We have to pick our battles, and this is definitely one we should take up, in honor of the souls who suffered so that we can be.
