Whether it’s your friends or your children, sometimes a soldier has to fall on his own sword

Got a concerned text from one of my besties this week that a sister we both know and respect professionally is, despite MANY warnings to the contrary, about to take a position with the institution that she and I both ran screaming into the night away from.

All I could do was shake my head and beam out some positive wishes. But we know how it’s going to end up. May take a few months, may take a few years. But it won’t end well.

Some of us can’t tune in to the frequency that casting your pearls before swine is a losing proposition.

And I get it. I truly do. When you’ve got bills stacking up and no foreseeable way to handle them all: in full, on time, or with a definitive plan, the pressure is intense. And the prospect of a decent job title and a steady check looms large.

The thing is…if you didn’t want solid advice about the offer, you wouldn’t have come looking for it. So, to get that advice and ignore it is just unwise. Even a bit fatalistic, to be honest. And nobody can save you from that level of willful detriment.

My friends who are parents, many sending their kids back to college for the spring semester, are sharing stories of similar consternation around these teens’ bad…
